Ending a relationship when you have children can be tough, but it's not impossible. These ten celebrity ex couples seem to have the whole co-parenting thing down to a science, and they all agree that the trick to making it work is to put the little ones first.

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey were married for eight years (2008-2016), and along the way they had fraternal twins, Moroccan and Monroe. They share custody of the children, but they spend most of their time with their mother.

Nick has defended Mariah from the beginning and has shot down anyone who suggested that she was anything less than an amazing mother to their children.

"You put the kids first," Nick said in an interview. "When you understand that you have unconditional love for these human beings and you want the best existence for them, then you put whatever differences you may have had aside."

Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were together for seven years and divorced after 10 (2004-2014). Their twins (Maximilian David and Emme Maribel) were born in 2008, and after the divorce JLo assumed primary custody.

The parents say that they are still "very good friends" and to keep things working they each make sure that the children know that the other parent loves them when he/she is not around.

Kevin Hart & Torrei Hart

Kevin Hart and Torrei Hart got married at a young age (Kevin was 22) and had two children together: daughter Heaven and son Hendrix. The couple didn't have the smoothest divorce, but their love for the kids inspired them to meet each other halfway.

"I will say that me and my ex-wife, regardless of the problems we went through, are in an amazing place now where we're friends, we're great parents, we're co-parents," Kevin told Chelsea Handler. When he married his second wife Eniko (right), Torrei was one of the first people to congratulate them on Instagram

Sharing a photo of their daughter hugging Kevin, Torrei wrote: "People really want me to be angry and bitter.....well I'm not, all you negative Ninas can have a seat. We didn't work out life goes on. Now it's time to be the best blended family we can be so our kids are surrounded with nothing but love."

Lenny Kravitz & Lisa Bonet

Front-runners for one of the most attractive families of all-time, Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz were married from 1987 to 1993 and had Zoë Kravitz at the end of 1988.

According to Complex, when she was 11, Zoë moved from Los Angeles to Miami to live with her dad. She says that to this day, her parents are still "super-close" and that Lenny also gets along with her step-father, "Game of Thrones" actor Jason Momoa.

Amber Rose & Wiz Khalifa

Amber Rose and Wiz got engaged in March of 2012, had their son Sebastian "Bash" Taylor Thomaz in February of 2013, and got married in July of 2013. They split a year and a half later and spent the next few years hashing out the terms of the divorce, but Bash was always the main concern.

"We try to have family days with him, even though we're not together," Rose told PEOPLE. "Kids want to see their parents together and if you can't be together in a relationship, you've got to come together as friends for you baby." Of Wiz Khalifa she said, "I feel like we can be the best of friends but we just can't be in a marriage together. And that's ok, because as long as Bash is happy, and we're able to co-parent, that's the most important thing.""

Kimora Lee Leissner & Russell Simmons

Russell and Kimora Lee tied the knot in 1998. Their family grew in 2000 when Ming Lee (left) was born and again in 2002 with Aoki Lee.

The power couple separated four years later and finalized the divorce in 2009. Kimora Lee also co-parents a child that she had with her second husband, actor Djimon Hounsou. In an interview with Daily Mail, she explained her philosophy on co-parenting and how relationships with ex-husbands change, not end. "Kids never go away from your life, and if you’ve been married, that person probably never goes away either. You never get rid of anyone and they never really get rid of you!"

"I try to do everything from the viewpoint of what’s best for my kids," Kimora Lee added. "I have three kids and two great dads and it’s not always easy, but you have to try to be a little selfless and we manage just fine."

Swizz Beatz and Mashonda Tifrere

Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Mashonda Tifrere met in the late '90s and were married in 2004. They had a son together two years later (Kasseem David Dean, Jr., right), but by 2008 things were messy.

The producer met Alicia Keys around the same time, but has denied rumors that she caused the breakup. Swizzy divorced Mashonda and married Keys in 2010, and later that year she gave birth to their first son, Egypt Daoud. Their second child, Genesis Ali Dean, was born in 2014.

Swizzy's eldest son, Prince Nasir Dean (left) is from a previous relationship with Nicole Levy, and he has a daughter named Nicole born to singer Jahna Sebastian. Nicole lives with her mother in London.

There was some drama between Mashonda and Alicia Keys in the beginning, which Keys addresses in the song "Blended Family," but all parties eventually learned to focus on the children so that their lives would be easier together.

Sean "Diddy" Combs & Kim Porter

Between 1994 and 2007, Diddy and Kim Porter's relationship status went through some changes. Diddy has six children, including three with Porter: twins D'Lila Star and Jessie James (front), and son Christian (middle). Quincy (right) is Porter's son from a previous relationship with singer Al B. Sure, but Diddy adopted and helped raise him.

Taye Diggs & Idina Menzel

Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs met in the mid '90s as co-stars on the hit Broadway show "Rent" and got hitched in 2003. They welcomed their son Walker Nathaniel in 2009. The couple split in 2013 but continued to raise their son together, despite being in different places.

"People can imagine it gets rough at times because we're not in the same city," Diggs told Entertainment Tonight. "We still love each other, and what's most important is that we love our son, and that stabilizes us."

"Your child comes first, that's all," Menzel told PEOPLE Now. "It's all about that. He comes first and you have to get past your own egos and you never talk bad about each other."

Lil' Wayne & Antonia "Toya" Wright

Toya and Lil' Wayne were 15 and 16 when they had Reginae in 1998. They were married in 2004, but separated two years later because of their differing lifestyles.

Reginae has spent most of her life with her mother, but Lil' Wayne has always been in the picture. "Wayne is very involved in her school life," Toya told Hip Hollywood. "He's very involved in her music career. She's back singing and she's doing it with her dad this time. We're both on the same page, because school is the number one priority and we both feel that. So things are going good."
